Englewood Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreement Lawyers
Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreement Attorney in Englewood
An Agreement Is Only Worth What It Will Enforce
A marital agreement is a plan for the hard conversation you hope never to have, and it only works if a Colorado court will enforce it years later. Johnson Law Group drafts and reviews prenuptial and postnuptial agreements for Englewood couples with the enforcement rules in mind from the first draft. Think of us as the North Star for your agreement, a fixed point of honest counsel while you decide what to protect.
Our Englewood office sits in the Inverness Business Park, just east of Interstate 25 and south of the Denver Tech Center. Agreement drafting works well by video with documents exchanged ahead of time, and many couples prefer to sign in person at Suite 250. Both options are available from the first call.
Family Law We Handle in Englewood
Colorado’s Uniform Premarital and Marital Agreements Act governs agreements signed since July 2014. An agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties. It is unenforceable if a party proves involuntary consent, no access to independent counsel, a missing rights notice when unrepresented, or inadequate financial disclosure.
Those four grounds are where most challenges are won or lost, and we draft with each of them in mind. For the full framework, start with how prenuptial and postnuptial agreements work in Colorado.
These related matters are what a marital agreement is usually written to address, and each has its own Englewood page:
- Child custody: Parenting time and decision-making, what Colorado calls parental responsibilities.
- Child support: Setting, modifying, and enforcing support under Colorado’s guideline formula.
- Contested divorce: When spouses disagree on the terms and the case needs temporary orders, discovery, or a hearing.
- Divorce: Dissolution of marriage in Colorado, from the first filing through the final decree.
- Divorce mediation: Resolving the terms of your divorce with a neutral mediator instead of a contested hearing.
- Domestic partnership: Dissolving a civil union or domestic partnership and sorting out property and parenting.
- High-conflict child custody: Parenting disputes involving serious allegations, court-appointed evaluators, or a parent who will not cooperate.
- High net worth divorce: Business interests, executive compensation, and estates where valuation drives the outcome.
- Modification: Changing parenting time, child support, or maintenance after the decree when circumstances change.
- Orders of protection: Civil protection orders for safety, and how they interact with a pending divorce.
- Property division: Dividing marital property and debt, including homes, businesses, and retirement accounts.
- Spousal maintenance: Colorado’s approach to alimony, from eligibility through amount, duration, and modification.
- Uncontested divorce: When you and your spouse agree on every issue and want the paperwork done right the first time.

A prenuptial or postnuptial agreement is not filed with any court when it is signed. It becomes a court matter only if a divorce or legal separation is filed later, when the district court at the Justice Center in Centennial decides whether to enforce it. From our Inverness office, the Justice Center is about five miles northeast, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car.
Because enforcement happens years after signing, the record created at signing is what matters: who had counsel, what was disclosed, and how much time each party had. We build that record deliberately so the agreement survives the challenge it was written to withstand.
If an agreement is later contested inside an Arapahoe County divorce, the dispute follows the ordinary domestic relations schedule. That begins with an initial status conference no later than 42 days after the petition is filed.

Why Englewood Families Trust Johnson Law Group
The first call is not a sales call. We listen to what is happening in your family and what you want to protect. You will leave with a clear read on where you stand, even when it is not what you hoped to hear.
We build your case the way you would want it built. Organized records, early preparation, and a strategy you can actually follow. That work starts on day one, so nothing at the Justice Center catches you flat-footed.
A client portal that keeps you in the loop. Real-time alerts, case milestones, and billing visibility, included at no additional cost. You will always know where your case stands.
We are staffed for agreements that need to hold up. Business owners, second marriages with children, and couples with assets in more than one state land here regularly. The firm’s footprint across Colorado, Illinois, and Wyoming means complexity does not require a second law firm.
No outcome guarantees, only preparation. No lawyer can promise a particular result, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. What we commit to is the preparation, strategy, and communication that give your case its strongest footing.
What to Expect When You Call
Our consultation process is straightforward and built around three things you need before any decisions get made:
- We listen first. Tell us what is happening. The short version is fine, and we will ask the questions that matter.
- We explain what Colorado law says. In plain English, with no lecture and no scare tactics.
- We map your next step. You will leave knowing what comes next: filing, responding, gathering records, or taking time to think it through.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do we both need our own lawyer for an Englewood prenup?
Colorado does not require both parties to hire a lawyer, but each party must have access to independent counsel: a reasonable time to decide, find a lawyer, and get advice. When one party signs without a lawyer, the agreement must include a plain-language notice of the rights being waived or an explanation of them. In practice, separate counsel for each party is the strongest protection against a later challenge.
Can a prenup decide child support or custody in Colorado?
No. A marital agreement cannot adversely affect a child’s right to support, and the court decides parenting time and decision-making on the child’s best interests when the case arises. An agreement can address property, debt, and spousal maintenance, and even a maintenance term can be set aside if enforcing it would be unconscionable when the divorce is filed.
Do I have to come into your Inverness office, or can we handle the agreement virtually?
Either works. We draft and negotiate by video with documents shared through our portal, and many Englewood couples choose to sign in person at Inverness Parkway. Nothing is filed with a court at signing, so there is no courthouse appearance unless the agreement is contested in a later divorce.
